I believe that everyone should have their version of the full Primary Series, and that it can be practiced safely and effectively over a lifetime.

In the Ashtanga yoga method, alignment is ultimately, an inner one relating to how the breath and stretching to create an internal heat. It should not be confused with Iyengar’s idea of most literal, physical alignment.

What the Ashtanga Yoga of Pattabhi Jois misses in terms of its instruction is the type of clear technical information characterised by Iyengar. In this workshop we will focus clearly and precisely on exactly how to perform each posture in the Primary Series.

We will look at the why behind each posture to understand their function better so we can gain the ability to approach them more effectively, in a way that works for purpose in our own bodies.

7.00AM - 8.30AM: Workshop - Step by step through the primary series

General topics of exploration:

  • Flexion: why it’s not the same as ‘forward folding’
  • Lotus work: what ‘hip opening’ actually means and how to protect your knees
  • Spinal Torsion: the key to effective twists
8.30-8.45: Break
8.45-10.30: Led Primary

Led talk through Primary series with instructions and modifications for each asana. Great for those looking to further their knowledge as well as teachers looking for verbal cues to use in classes.

10.30-10.45: Break
10.45-11.30: CHAT / Q&A

Any further questions addressed on all matters of practice including how often, how to manage a short form, how to know if you’re doing it ‘right’ and how to use ‘vinyasa’ rather than get used by it.

The only thing you need to know is the shape inside the shape. And when you know the inner template, you also find you let go of the dissatisfaction, confusion and often pain, of pushing yourself into the visual form of the posture.

Come and learn a new, happier and more comfortable way to view the Primary Series in simple and easy language anyone whether long term teacher or new student can understand and benefit from.

Adam has been a yoga practitioner since 1999 and has taught Ashtanga yoga internationally for over twenty years. His style is open, non-dogmatic and eclectic while remaining rooted in an appreciation of the benefits of the method of ashtanga as he learnt it in Mysore, India.

In 2012 he completed the Advanced A sequence with Sharath who granted him authorization to teach.  Adam meets all students where they are, hopefully, with humour, kindness and inspiration, holding a safe and supportive space for personal enquiry. Equally at home teaching all levels, he gives all students attention and interest. He is democratic in his approach and kind and believes that the practice should not feel like a test.

Coming from an academic background in philosophy and a professional one as a chef, he is knowledgeable, practical, and relatable in his approach. Many consider him humorous too.

Adam and his wife Theresa run the online yoga platform Keen on Yoga and he hosts the Keen on Yoga Podcast interviewing many of the world’s most renowned Ashtanga teachers and philosophical academics.
