Ashtanga Workshop & Intensive in Chatham, NY, USA

April 17-22, 2026

Hosted by Chatham Yoga Center

 Ashtanga Yoga for All

Adam is delighted to announce his first time teaching in the USA and will be hosted by Rachel Wood at Chatham Yoga Center.

The right way to practice Ashtanga yoga is a way that works for you. One that is sustainable, effective for purpose, and, enjoyable! Ashtanga is simply a style of hatha yoga; accessible to everyone. Once the postures are understood in their basic purpose, then it’s just suiting the posture’s purpose to your own body.

Ashtanga is an energy practice, and this means working more deeply understand to your own unique energy rather than trying to squash into a system because it’s called traditional. Indeed, the roots of yoga support this viewpoint.

SATURDAY 17th
8.00 – 10.00:  Led Primary Series for Everyone

A unique led class featuring both the vinyasa count as well as fundamental cues for each

posture. Everyone will be made to feel welcome and safe in participating in this class, with options given regarding variations so everyone can do their version of the whole of the Primary series.

10.30 – 12.00: Primary Series – A New View

In this whistlestop tour of the Primary Series, we shall go through the real meaning of a ‘forward fold’ (it’s a backstretch), as well as show how they’re all different. Along with this, we shall consider how one of the primary functions of the forward is as the foundational movement for gently opening the sacrum.

12:00 – 1.00: Break
1:00 – 2.30: Yoga Philosophy and The Problem of Karma

The primary problem according to yoga is known as karma. Simply put, the tyranny of the past on the present.  We will discuss the various answers given by the main yoga schools over the centuries to this problem, differentiating the classical yoga tradition from the tantric in doing so.

SUNDAY 18th
8.00 – 10.00: Mysore Self-Practice

Adam does not believe in forcing people into postures and focuses light, non-intrusive physical assistance and spoken tips for you to experience asanas in a way that feels good for your body. All physical abilities are welcome. It’s OK to use practice sheets, props or to modify asanas to suit your own needs and Adam will help you with this.

This self-practice class follows the traditional Ashtanga sequences as taught in Mysore. We ask that you stick to the sequence of Ashtanga yoga as your ability allows, beginners are asked to have memorised sun salutations A&B and the first few standing postures.

10.30 – 12.00: Common Injuries and How To Prevent Them

There is a group of normal suspects here and we shall go through them, ensuring you avoid as much as possible falling into their trap. If you already have an injury, feel free to bring it along (as it’s coming anyway!) and we can see if we can start removing its unwanted presence from your life and practice.

1:00 – 2.30:  Question and Answer and general chat on the common challenges of maintaining a practice.

We tend to push ourselves too hard. Both in practice and regarding the feelings of guilt and self-recrimination when we don’t. Let’s see if we can turn this common narrative around.

4-DAY INTENSIVE – ASHTANGA YOGA AS A HOLISTIC PRACTICE

This intensive is a very practical deep dive into principles of asana and philosophy that you will likely not have encountered in your typical TT. Adam brings his years of practice experience, having been one of very few Europeans to complete the full Advanced A series with Sharath in Mysore in 2012, he didn’t stop his learning and exploration there.

Having hosted most of the renowned Ashtanga teachers in the world in the early days at Purple Valley Yoga in Goa, as well as having interviewed top yoga scholars on the Keen on Yoga Podcast, Adam has a unique insight into asana and philosophy.  He shares his knowledge in a grounded way that will give you much to digest over the coming months. Bring a pen and paper, you will want to take notes.
