The Bhagavad Gita For Daily Life (recorded) Course with Adam Keen

The Bhagavad Gita is a classic text studied by aspiring yoga students. In this course Adam takes you chapter by chapter through the Bhagavad Gita. This is not an expert appraisal of the text. Rather, it is from Adam’s knowledge and experience as one who has used it for a number of years and methodically read it over countless times.

In fact, for at least a year at one point, these 18 chapters were the only thing he would read. He would pick at least one chapter each night, read and reflect upon its application to my own life experiences and struggles. You could use this course in the same manger. Adam unpicks the densely packed ideas compressed into each stanza and makes them stand out.

For your journey

This in a way so you will feel deeply resonant with your life’s journey, as opposed to simply remaining words, or, at best thoughts on a page that you read. The Bhagavad Gita has remained popular over the years as it is a book of action. Moreover, it applies to the regular individual in the world. This is not for the monastic, or, even, the committed spiritual aspirant only.

This book is a guideline for you, struggling with choices about how best to lead you life. Its popularity as well as its value are more relevant today than ever as we have more choices to make on a daily basis. Yet, with more freedom, less and less clear guidelines within which to skilfully make them. The Bhagavad Gita opens with its hero, Arjuna in this crisis, on a battlefield where a civil-war is raging.

This is metaphorical; for the battlefield and the civil war is within us. The allegory works very well to animate the text, connecting to us on an emotional and visceral level. As Arjuna agonises over the best course of action to take, he really is talking of our daily and modern struggles. The story draws us along, keeping us enthralled to find the answer.

The answer to all dilemmas is within us

However, only to find that the answer is not as we had assumed it would be. Instead, the answer is less about our actions themselves, rather, developing our own quality of attitude towards them. For this reason, the text can be opaque and ambiguous. For example, it is all well and good being told to do our duty in the world, but, that is not as clear for us now, as it was at the time for Arjuna. His life-choices and profession were dictated by the circumstances of his birth. Equally, there is a great deal of discussion regarding non-attachment as well as devotion.

Yet, what do these really mean on a practical level to our lives? Especially, if we are not religious in the way that was assumed at the time the text was written. Join Adam as he goes through each chapter and attempts to bring them to life for you, and your life. Instead of vague discussions on general themes, you can read through the text together and pick out particular points of interest showing exactly how radical and inspiring this thinking remains even today.

In this way Adam endeavours to help you make this book your own, a manual and source of strength and solace as it has for him for a number of years now. *The companion book for this course is The Bhagavad Gita translated by Stanley Lombardo, with the introduction and foreword by Richard H. Davis.
