Ashtanga South of France, July 2024

Fully booked Ashtanga South of France with Adam Keen

July 1st - 28th, 2024 at Ashtanga Yoga Golfe Juan

Adam is delighted to be teaching for the entire month of July 2024 at the bijou studio of Ashtanga Yoga Golfe Juan, located on the Côte d’Azur, between Antibes and Cannes.

This is a unique opportunity to learn in a small group setting and received individual attention and access to Adam's famed technical knowledge as the studio accommodated 15 students simultaneously. You can join the whole month or by the week.  We expect this to fill up fast so if you are interested, bookings are confirmed when paid for.

Mysore Classes, Monday to Saturday, 9.00 am – 11.00 am

Within the framework of the Ashtanga sequences, there is much room to suit the practice and make it work for you. Adam gives yoga assistance in a safe and non-intrusive way. He does not believe in forcing people into postures, rather, he uses verbal and light physical touch to open up new directions for the individual to follow as they wish. This practice is based on individual exploration, kindness, and fun. It is not an exam or military exercise. All are welcome to the Mysore class. Adam is happy if you need practice sheets, or he will show you the postures.

Saturday Workshops

July 6th, 11.30 am – 13.00 – Fundamental Openings

There are a relatively small number of fundamental movements that yoga asana requires we grasp to progress. However, these openings are subtle; and not necessarily straightforward to understand on the level of the body.

And, from the basic standing postures where they’re first presented in their most simple form, they get increasingly complicated. Therefore, we shall look at these postures, consider them in detail, and find they translate into a deeper understanding of what’s going on in a variety of problem postures further on down the line.

July 13th, 11.30 am – 13.00 – Hip Openers

It’s often assumed that opening the hips simply means the ability to get the knees to the floor in baddha konasana or achieve mari D. However, this particular opening is only a small part of a much more complex process of hip opening; less to do with the inner thighs than opening the sacrum. It’s no exaggeration to say that the whole practice is based on sacral opening. So, to practice effectively we need to be aware of all that this entails, for it is much more than simple external rotation of the hips.

July 20th, 11.30 am – 13.00 - Arm Balances & Inversions

The Ashtanga practice often involves balancing on one’s hands. However, as is often the case, although it demands strength, it doesn’t always build it. The practice is more slanted towards flexibility than strength.

Therefore, we shall address the basic strength movements in the practice to get as much out of them as we can, and then, how to stretch generally to build more strength (meaning stability) in stretching. After this, we will look at a few other ways of building strength in the body before moving on to try our luck in a range of arm balances from the Primary, Intermediate and Advanced series to suit (and challenge) all levels of ability.

July 27th, 11.30 am– 13.00 - Mobilising The Shoulder Girdle And The Jump-Back/Thru

A second look at how we can generate more mobility in the scapula area. For, despite the claims that we need more core strength, or the (most unhelpful cliché) more bandha, it’s scapula mobility that results in how well we achieve this most elusive linking movement.

Everyone can get this movement in varying degrees according to our bodies’ capacity. We all have all the muscles we need; we simply must use them all more effectively in combination with each other. This is something that, whatever level we’re at, we all can work on more, so this workshop aims at giving some effective pointers to unlock our, often hidden, floating potential.

About the Studio

Ashtanga Yoga Golfe Juan is the South of France home of Linda Munro and Gérald Disse, founders of Ashtanga Yoga Paris in 2004 and are pioneers of the practice in the city. AYG is borne of their dream to create a small, familial yoga school in the sunny south of France. Located on the ground floor of their home, overlooking a lush garden of tropical plants, the studio imbibes a homey, peaceful ambience.

Golfe Juan is the seaside part of the commune of Vallauris, located on the Côte d’Azur, between Antibes and Cannes. It’s less touristy than those two towns, with calm beaches, coastal restaurants and a harbor. Golfe Juan is the seaside part of the commune of Vallauris, which is where Picasso lived from 1948 until 1955.
