Cardwell was a magic spot, it seemed only a stone’s throw away from Hinchinbrook Island. The largest Island National Park in Australia, and one of the 90 islands that make up the Whitsundays. Mike had us up early to get to the beach for sunrise, but as much as we tried we could not budge Tommy (not exactly a morning person). So we left him to sleep while we watched the most magical sunrise from behind the islands, it was so peaceful. I felt even more appreciation for this moment after listening to a local we met talk about Cyclone Yasi and what he and his family had been through. Cardwell, Bowen and many other towns were devastated by Yasi, the park we stayed at had just been reopened only 2 weeks earlier after being destroyed 1 year ago. It was inspiring to see how positive and friendly everyone seemed as you could see that many were/are still rebuilding their lives.
