Dinner with Anthony and Janet
We stopped in Kalgoorlie for a few nights while a huge storm passed over and we saw more rain than we had seen for many months. Mike’s cousin Anthony works at BHP and we caught up with him and Janet, his fiancee, for dinner. This historic town seems to have more pubs than Darwin! It is all about mining here and the main attraction is the super pit. A massive hole in the earth, which made me feel as though I was looking at a picture of the moon, completely lifeless and barren. Except of course for those gigantic trucks that looked like toys in the huge pit! Bryce said ‘It makes me feel weird inside, sort of sad’. Yes sweetie, I had that feeling too.
The Infamous Nullarbor had us doing some long drives, but with the recent storm and cool weather it made it much easier than the 40 degree temperatures that could be expected at this time of year. Although it didn’t do anything to deter the flies! It was fun to have a fire again and toast marshmallows at a lovely free campsite. The views over the Great Australian Bight were fantastic, the rugged coast line spectacular! The Nullarbor, while long wasn’t as boring as we’d imagined, our expectations of it were much lower than the reality.
